Don Pooley Wins the 2002 U.S. Senior Open

Pooley Wins Senior Open In Thrilling
Five-Hole Playoff

Baltimore, Md. – After a record-setting third round, Don Pooley was asked how he would sleep with a three-shot lead heading into the final round.

Pooley’s response? Not a lot of rest was needed.

Coming off as a fortune teller, Pooley patched together four hours’ worth before going out Sunday and outlasting Tom Watson in a captivating five-hole playoff for the U.S. Senior Open victory at Caves Valley Golf Club.

Baltimore, Md. -- Tom Kite, always a gallery favorite, just couldn’t stay out of the crowd on Sunday. It was a thrill for the fans, but bad news for Kite. Playing from behind the ropes usually isn’t the best strategy for winning a championship.

Baltimore, Md. -- Bob Clark was playing in only his second U.S. Senior Open this week. His first was last year at Salem Country Club, where he didn't make the cut, but at Caves Valley, Clark got to play all four rounds.

BALTIMORE, Md. – As he was leaving an interview session Saturday, Don Pooley was intercepted by Tom Watson near the door.

Watson held out his right hand and jokingly said, “You didn’t make any putts out there today, did you?”

Pooley Smashes Record

Baltimore, Md. – No. 16.  Beautiful drive straight down the fairway.  Second shot lands about 3 feet from the flagstick. Nice Easy putt for a birdie.

Notebook: Dougherty Accomplishes Goal -- So Far

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Ed Dougherty has been close before to winning a U.S. Senior Open before.

The year was 1999 and Dougherty opened with a 68 to take the first-round lead, and then followed it with a 69. Dougherty stumbled in the third round, shooting a 75, but still held the 54-hole lead.

NCR Country Club In Ohio To Host 2005 U.S. Senior Open

Far Hills, N.J. – NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, a neighboring city to Dayton, has been selected as the site of the 2005 U.S. Senior Open, the United States Golf Association has announced.  The championship, for golfers age 50 and older, will be played from July 28-31.

Hall Shoots Record 65,
Overtakes Eaks

Baltimore, Md. – Going into the second round at the Senior Open Friday, Walter Hall had never posted a better score than 70 during his three stabs at the championship.

Things change.

After finishing off three holes from the first round early Friday morning, Hall went on to shoot a 6-under 65 to grab the lead from first-round leader R.W. Eaks.

The Architect Caves Valley Golf Club was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1991.   It is the newest golf course (11 years old) to host a U.S. Senior Open.
