| 2001 Season Highlights |
| Had four top 10s in his first 12 starts of the year,
but only recorded two more in his last 19 appearances
of the season...Was in the hunt at the Novell Utah Showdown
before finishing T2 with three other players, one stroke
back of Steve Veriato. Played his first 33 holes of that
event without a bogey, but bogeyed two of his final three
holes on Saturday...Also T6 at the Emerald Coast Classic
thanks to rounds of 66-68 on the weekend at The Moors...T8
at The Transamerica after closing with rounds of 67-65
at Silverado, his best two back-to-back scores of the
year...Went over $6 million in SENIOR TOUR career money
at the Bruno's Memorial Classic...Made the seventh of
eight aces on the SENIOR TOUR when he holed a 6-iron shot
on the fourth hole at the TPC at the Twin Cities in the
final round, the second straight day an ace had been made
on that particular hole. Hole in one was his second on
the SENIOR TOUR and first since the 1997 Southwestern
Bell Dominion event in San Antonio. |
| Career Highlights |
| 2000: Missed out on a spot among the top 31 money-winners
when David Lundstrom nipped him by $941...Had his best
performance of the year in his first start in Hawaii.
Was the 36-hole leader at the MasterCard Championship,
but hit just 10 greens on Sunday and posted a final-round
74 to T2 at Hualalai. 1999: The last of 12 millionaires
on the SENIOR TOUR and played his best golf in several
of the year's biggest tournaments...Although only playing
36 holes, he was declared the winner of The Tradition
after a freak snowstorm wiped out the final round at Desert
Mountain. Victory in Arizona was his second SENIOR TOUR
major championship and first since 1997...Also battled
Hale Irwin for most of the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship
before finishing a distant second at the TPC of Michigan...Went
over the $5-million mark in SENIOR TOUR career earnings
at the AT&T Canada Senior Open Championship. 1998: Seven
top 10s in 28 starts, highlighted by a solo second near
St. Louis at the Boone Valley Classic. Was the 36-hole
leader at Boone Valley, but fell into second two strokes
short of Larry Nelson, despite a final-round 68 that included
a pair of eagles. 1997: Earned a career-best $1,128,578
for seventh on the final money list...Played his best
during June and July, winning $734,400 during that period
or more than two-thirds of his total for the year...High
point came during the final week in June, when he outdueled
John Bland on the final day for a one-stroke win at the
U.S. Senior Open at Olympia Fields CC in suburban Chicago...The
victory, and a career-best $232,500, came just one week
after he fought off a late challenge by Hale Irwin and
earned a one-stroke win at the Nationwide Championship
near Atlanta...Teamed with Bland earlier in the season
to win the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in March...Recorded
his first SENIOR TOUR hole-in-one at the Southwestern
Bell Dominion. 1996: Became a SENIOR TOUR millionaire
for the first time by winning $42,875 (T10) at the Energizer
SENIOR TOUR Championship, the final event of the season...Was
a one-stroke victor over Tom Wargo and Brian Barnes at
the PaineWebber Invitational and fired a final-round 67
to win the Franklin Quest Championship by two strokes
over Kermit Zarley. 1995: Never went more than four consecutive
appearances without a top-five finish after mid-April...Broke
into the victory circle at the Bruno's Memorial Classic,
becoming the second of five first-time winners...Used
a second-round 63 to cruise to a five-stroke win over
J.C. Snead at Greystone Golf Club...Missed going to a
playoff in Minnesota at the Burnet Senior Classic when
Raymond Floyd holed an eight-foot birdie putt on the final
hole to break a tie. 1994: Nominated for SENIOR TOUR Rookie
of the Year honors after posting seven top-10s and was
out of the top 25 just once in 22 starts...Finished T2
at the Vantage at the Dominion and again at the U.S. Senior
Open at Pinehurst, one stroke behind Simon Hobday. 1993:
Finished second to Bill Hall at the SENIOR TOUR National
Qualifying Tournament at Grenelefe to earn his initial
exemption. |
