 2001 Season Highlights
Surpassed the $1 million mark in yearly earnings for the second consecutive season and was again among the top players on the SENIOR TOUR with a win and five second-place finishes...Seventh on the final money list with a career best total of $1,721,339...Highlight of his year came in April when he closed with a course-record 10-under-par 62 at The Countrywide Tradition to go wire-to-wire and win his second senior major championship by a whopping nine strokes. Needed just 19 putts in his final round and his 72-hole total of 23-under-par 265 was the best four-round score on the SENIOR TOUR since Jack Nicklaus posted an all-time record of 27-under 261 at the 1990 FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship. The nine-stroke win was also the largest margin of victory since Hale Irwin won the 1997 PGA Seniors' Championship by 12 strokes. His 62 was also the lowest score ever shot in a SENIOR TOUR major championship. Victory near Phoenix was his fourth SENIOR TOUR title, coming in his 40th career start. Did not register his fourth win on the PGA TOUR until his 541st start...Nearly won his third career major in July, but fell in a one-hole playoff to Allen Doyle at the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship. Rallied from an opening-round 74 to shoot scores of 66-67-66 and appeared on the verge of claiming the title before Doyle drained a 35-foot putt on the 72nd hole to force the overtime session...Closed the season with a solo second-place finish at the SENIOR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at Gaillardia near his home in Edmond, OK and also was second at the 3M Championship, T2 at both the Las Vegas Senior Classic and The Transamerica...Was one of the hottest players on the SENIOR TOUR in the last part of the year with four top-five finishes in his last five starts. Was a combined 58-under-par in that stretch with 11 of 15 rounds in the 60s. Ended the year with 14 consecutive sub-par rounds...Player of the Month in April.
 Career Highlights
2000: Earned Rookie of the Year honors thanks to three victories, including a win in a SENIOR TOUR major, and $1,408,194 in earnings, eighth on the final money list...Broke through in a big way with his first SENIOR TOUR title, the rain-shortened PGA Seniors' Championship. Victory was his first since the '87 Pensacola Open and included rounds of 68-66-67. Became just the 10th player ever to make his first senior victory a major championship when he waltzed to a seven-shot triumph over Dana Quigley, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson and Hale Irwin at PGA National. First-place check of $324,000 was easily his largest ever and more than he made in his best season on the PGA TOUR (1986--$310,285)...Added his second victory at the SBC Championship in San Antonio, holing a birdie putt on the final hole for a one-stroke win over Walter Hall and Larry Nelson...Claimed his third title at the Novell Utah Showdown, outdistancing his neighbor, Gil Morgan, by two strokes in Park City...Other strong efforts include: T2 at the Audi Senior Classic in Mexico, a third at the AT&T Canada Senior Open and T4 at the LiquidGolf.com Invitational, one stroke out of a playoff. 1999: Made five appearances on the SENIOR TOUR after turning 50 in August...Did not play his first event until the first of October, due to a back injury he sustained right before he was eligible to play...Made debut on the SENIOR TOUR at the Vantage Championship, and had a pair of 66s on the weekend to finish T15...Closed with a 66 at the Raley's Gold Rush Classic to finish T15.
