 2001 Season Highlights
Enjoyed the most lucrative year of his career with over $1.8 million, good for the sixth on the money list for the second straight year...Among his 13 top-10s were two wins, a pair of seconds and two thirds...Kept alive his record of never winning any TOUR event prior to Sept. 1 when he posted back-to-back victories early in the fall. Won a playoff for the rain-shortened Kroger Senior Classic title and then claimed the inaugural Allianz Championship the following week...Made a dramatic eagle on the final hole of regulation at the Kroger event to set up a playoff with Tom Jenkins and then won with a birdie on the first extra hole. Hit 3-wood from 245 yards for a one-foot tap-in eagle putt...Used seven birdies in an 11-hole stretch to win by two strokes at the Allianz Championship and earned the largest check of his career -- $262,500...Wins late in the campaign capped a four-week run where he finished in the top 10 in every tournament. Started with a T8 at the Novell Utah Showdown and followed with a solo fifth place finish at the AT&T Canada Senior Open prior to his two victories...Contended for his first senior major championship crown before losing by a stroke to Tom Watson at the Senior PGA Championship. Missed an uphill six-foot birdie putt to tie on Ridgewood CC's final hole...Was also a runner-up to Larry Nelson at the MasterCard Championship to start the year...Held the 36-hole lead at the State Farm Senior Classic, but fell one stroke shy of a playoff with Bruce Fleisher and eventual winner Allen Doyle... Selected as the SENIOR TOUR's Player of the Month for September...T3 in Rounds-in-the-60s with 46 and was fourth in sub-par rounds with 66.
 Career Highlights
2000: Claimed the first two victories of his SENIOR TOUR career and yearly winnings of $1.6 million almost matched his entire earnings total in 25 years on the PGA TOUR...Named the Player of the Month for October after posting four straight top-5 finishes, that included back-to-back victories in northern California at The Transamerica and the Gold Rush Classic...Win in the Napa Valley ended a victory drought of just over 14 years ('86 Tucson Match Play Championship). 18-under-par 198 score at Silverado was three better than Bruce Fleisher and was a tournament record...Cruised to a two-stroke victory over Ed Dougherty at the Gold Rush Classic with a 21-under 195 total for 54 holes, a tournament record at the time and the lowest 54-hole score on the SENIOR TOUR for the season. Posted back-to-back rounds of 62-66--128 on the final two days at Serrano, the lowest back-to-back scores of the year. 62 in the second round at the Gold Rush event was his low round as a senior player and was a course record at Serrano. Victory near Sacramento allowed him to become the first player since Gibby Gilbert in 1992 to win consecutive starts with sub-200 scores and he also became the first player since Bob Charles (1992) to win consecutive tournaments in northern California...Had a string of 10 straight sub-70 rounds late in the year, sharing the best streak on the SENIOR TOUR with Stewart Ginn...Recorded his second hole-in-one on the SENIOR TOUR in the opening round of the Boone Valley Classic...Had more sub-par rounds (80) than any other player and was third in top-10 finishes with 18...Ranked second to Dana Quigley (475) in Total Birdies with 453. 1999: Turned in a solid rookie season with nine top-10 finishes and was among the circuit's top-20 money-winners...Came closest to a victory at the Bell Atlantic Classic. Fired a final-round 65 on Sunday at Hartefeld National to come from four strokes off the pace and catch Tom Jenkins, but eventually lost to Jenkins on the first playoff hole...Made the first hole-in-one on the SENIOR TOUR last year in the final round of the Royal Caribbean Classic. 1998: Earned full exemption for 1999 by finishing T6 at the 1998 SENIOR TOUR National Qualifying Tournament at the Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort. After carding rounds of 67-76-72, fired a 3-under-par 69 on the final day to secure his top-eight finish and a full exemption for the 1999 campaign.
