Easily enjoyed the most successful year of his career...Earned $716,197, surpassing his previous best of $470,789 in his rookie year on the SENIOR TOUR in 1996...Gained his first SENIOR TOUR victory when he defeated Allen Doyle in a two-hole playoff to capture the NFL Golf Classic in New Jersey. Birdied the 18th hole in regulation at Montclair Country Club to help set up the playoff, and then got up and down for a par-3 on the second extra hole to earn the win. It was his first professional title since the 1973 Liggett & Myers Open Match Play Championship, ending a drought of 27 years, nine months and 15 days, the second-longest gap between a final PGA TOUR victory and first SENIOR TOUR triumph (Mike Fetchick --28 years, 9 months and 27 days)...Held sole possession of the lead after the first- and second-rounds at the Emerald Coast Classic near Pensacola in March before a final-round 72 left him T4...Also T4 at the rain-shortened Kroger Senior Classic where he shot a 7-under-par 63 on Sunday, his best round as a SENIOR TOUR player and also matching the low round of his PGA TOUR career.
 Career Highlights

Was one of five players tied at 10-under 278 after 72 holes, but made bogey on the first playoff hole...Advanced to the final stage with a third-place effort at the Southern California regional. 1999: Played in 11 SENIOR TOUR events and T24 at the State Farm Senior Classic. 1998: Participated in 27 SENIOR TOUR events after finishing ninth at the 1997 National Qualifying Tournament...T4 at the Northville Long Island Classic and then T5 at the Novell Utah Showdown...Finished out of the top-50 on the money list and then lost his Player's Card for 1999 after placing T49 at the National Qualifying Tournament at Grenelefe. 1997: Had his best outing of the season in his first start, T3 at the Royal Caribbean Classic. Carded rounds of 69-67 on the weekend and pocketed $56,100, the second largest check of his career...Also T6 at the Kroger Senior Classic and T8 at the Northville Long Island Classic. 1996: Was fully exempt after finishing eighth at the 1995 SENIOR TOUR National Qualifier. Made birdie on the first extra hole of a four-man playoff...Finished 25th on the money list in his first season...Almost won the Bell Atlantic Classic, but lost along with Tom Wargo, to Dale Douglass in a playoff near Philadelphia. Claimed a then career-best paycheck of $72,000 at Chester Valley as a result of his second-place effort...Also T4 at the FHP Health Care Classic at Ojai, CA and T7 in the PGA Seniors' Championship.
