3,101 Entries Accepted, 70 Players Exempt For 2002 U.S. Senior

Far Hills,
N.J. - A record total of 3,101 entries were accepted and a
total of 70 players are exempt from having to qualify for
the 2002 U.S. Senior Open Championship scheduled from June
27-30 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Md.
Entries
closed at 5 p.m. EDT on May 15. A total of 3,202 entries were
received for this U.S. Senior Open, but 101 were rejected
because the entrant had played poorly in past qualifying rounds
or had a USGA Handicap Index higher than 3.4. In 2000, the
USGA accepted a record 3,007 entries. In 2001, 2,953 entries
were accepted.
In addition
to defending champion Bruce Fleisher (2001), nine other past
winners who are exempt and have entered are: Dale Douglass
(1986); Dave Eichelberger (1999); Hale Irwin (1998 and 2000);
Larry Laoretti (1992); Graham Marsh (1997); Jack Nicklaus
(1991, 1993); Arnold Palmer (1981); Gary Player (1987, 1988);
and Dave Stockon (1996).
All previous
U.S. Senior Open champions are exempt, but they must file
an entry.
The remainder
of the field will be filled from sectional qualifying at 44
sites from June 7-17.
The U.S.
Senior Open is one of 13 national championships conducted
annually by the USGA. Other championships include the U.S.
Open, the U.S. Women's Open, and 10 amateur championships.
