2002 U.S. SENIOR OPEN FACT SHEET

June 27-30
Caves Valley Golf Club
Baltimore, Md.

PAR AND YARDAGE - Caves Valley Golf Club is set at 7,005 yards and par is 35-36--71.

THE ARCHITECT - Caves Valley Golf Club was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1991. It is the newest golf course (11 years old) to host a U.S. Senior Open.

DEFENDING CHAMPION - Starting the final round four shots out of the lead held by Isao Aoki, Bruce Fleisher fired a 2-under-par 68 to finish at even par 280 and win the 2001 U.S. Senior Open by one stroke over Aoki and Gil Morgan at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass. The win marked Fleisher's second USGA title. He also won the 1968 U.S. Amateur. Fleisher joins Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer as the third player to win both the Senior Open and the Amateur. His 33 years between USGA championships betters a record previously held by Marlene Streit of 29 years between her 1956 U.S. Women's Amateur title and her 1985 USGA Senior Women's Amateur win. He was the third-round leader at the 2000 U.S. Senior Open but finished as a runner-up to Hale Irwin.

2001 RE-CAP - Fleisher played in the third-to-last group in the final round and when he finished at even par, he was tied with three other players (Isao Aoki, Jim Colbert and Gil Morgan), who were still on the course. Of the contenders, he was the only player to record a par on the short but treacherous 18th hole.

He recorded three birdies and a bogey the first six holes of his final round before reeling off 12 straight pars.

QUOTING THE CHAMPION, BRUCE FLEISHER - "I ran into Gary Player before the round," Fleisher said. "He said: 'Bruce, this is your day. This is your time. You can take this thing. All you've got to do is focus, believe in yourself. You've already had a wonderful year. There's really no reason you can't pull this off.'"

MORE QUOTES FROM FLEISHER: "To have four guys at even par with two holes left and one guy hang on doesn't really surprise me because of the difficulty that this golf course gives you. So be it. I did it. I'm excited and I'm glad it's over. I did not want to go back out (tomorrow) for four holes."

QUOTES, TAKE THREE - "I will come off this high shortly. It's something that I will remember for a long time. I won on a very difficult golf course, playing the best the game has to offer in years past. It's something to be very proud of."

FLEISHER AT THE SENIOR OPEN - Here's a quick look at Bruce Fleisher's performance record at the U.S. Senior Open.
