Thomas and Associates, has worked there since 1987. . . this will be his first Senior Open, did attempt to qualify last year and tried to qualify for the US Open in ’99. . . in 2003, shot a 71, two strokes above third-place finisher, to grab the second of three spots at Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook, Illinois. . . at UNC, played golf from 1972-74, with no highlights to speak of save that they were beaten by Wake Forest every year he played; as a competitor in USGA events, played in the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur, did not make the match play, and in the 1989 Mid-Am at Crooked Stick, where he did make match play but lost in the third round; has also played in two Amateurs, failed to make match play both times; only win to speak of won the Gasparilla Invitational, national invitational, won in 1993. . . wife, Becky, married 32 years, will be present at Inverness, watching him play for first time since his appearance in the Mid-Am at Crooked Stick in ’89. . . also has 4 children (Jack, 26, engaged to be married this fall; Phil, 24, will caddie for him; daughter, Betsy, 22, senior at UNC; Kent, 20, will attend Ole Miss) |
