Earned a hero’s stature for his 1989 Ryder Cup singles
victory over Fred Couples, hitting a memorable 2-iron approach to
the 18th green at The Belfry to secure a 1-up victory and helping
Europe to a 14-14 tie and retention of the Ryder Cup. . . O’Connor
also competed on the 1975 Ryder Cup Team. . . Was one of the big
leaders on the PGA European Tour for more than two decades, including
sharing third place in the 1985 British Open. . . Only a few months
before turning 50, O’Connor placed 10th in the 1998 National Car
Rental English Open. . . Winner of the 1973, ’75, ’77 Irish Match
Play Championship, 1974 Zambian Open,1990 Kenya Open, 1992 Dunhill
British Masters . . .Six-time member of the World Cup of Golf (1974,
’75, ’78, ’85, ’89, ’92), the Alfred Dunhill Cup (1985, ’89, ’92)
and the 1974 and ’’84 Hennessey Cup.
In 2001 suffered a broken left leg when a motorcycle he was polishing
fell on his leg while at home in Ireland. Fractured the tibia and
the fibula near the bottom of the leg and had more than a dozen
pins inserted in the leg.
