Player Diary: Jack Nicklaus

Two-time Senior Open champion Jack Nicklaus shot a 3-over 74 in the third round and is currently at 11-over 224 for the championship. He is tied for 39th and shared his thoughts with www.ussenioropen.com:

[Saturday] was a tougher day than [Friday] for me, even though the course played a little easier. The greens were a little slower, and the wind didn’t come up much during the early morning.

The day didn’t get off to a very good start. I hit a good shot at No. 3 that went the other way and I made bogey. Then I hit a good tee shot at No. 4 that bounced through the fairway and made bogey. So it was just one of those days. I did eventually make a birdie at the last, but it was too little, too late.

I hit about eight greens [Saturday], not very exciting, and had 27 putts. But when you never hit a green you can’t have many putts. You've got to make something.

When you play as badly as I did you have to do something right to shoot a 74. [Saturday] it was making eight up-and-downs for par.

I worked on my swing [Friday] on the range. I just tried to get my swing right. I worked on shallowing it out, and I did get it shallowed out for most of the round, but I got a little sloppy at the middle of the round when I bogeyed the 15th and 16th holes.

The last few holes I found what I lost and got it back again.

I feel like I am making progress on that part of my game and will focus on continuing to shallow out my swing [Sunday].
