Only fitting that he would return to Inverness Golf Club which
was the site of the 1979 U.S. Open. Hinkle and the USGA made news
when Hinkle decided to cut the dogleg on the 8th hole by playing
it in the 17th hole. After Hinkle found success in that strategy
in the first round many others followed suit so the next morning
before the start of the second round the USGA put in a 24-foot Black
Hills spruce tree that was named the "Hinkle Tree".
