Only fitting that he would return to Inverness Golf Club which was the site of the 1979 U.S. Open. Hinkle and the USGA made news when Hinkle decided to cut the dogleg on the 8th hole by playing it in the 17th hole. After Hinkle found success in that strategy in the first round many others followed suit so the next morning before the start of the second round the USGA put in a 24-foot Black Hills spruce tree that was named the "Hinkle Tree".
