| March 13, had double bypass open heart surgery
after feeling pain during trip to Florida. . . learned
that his left artery was 99 percent blocked. . . couldn’t
play golf, let alone engage in physical activity, for 10 weeks. . . about
3 weeks after surgery, started putting. . . beginning
May 1, started practicing. First round back, shot 75, played five
more rounds before June 9 Senior Open qualifying. . . shot
69 on French Lick, taking medalist honors and beating out over 40
players. Calls qualifying a "miracle". . . Attended
Indiana on a Western Golf Association Evans’ Scholarship, scholarship
for students who are caddies. . . played baseball at
Indiana. . . played first golf tournament at Western
Amateur in 1972, failed to make the cut. . . second
golf tournament was the Indianapolis Spring Four Ball, which he won
total of seven times in the 1970s, ’80s. . . at first
the youngest sales representative for the McGregor Golf company, in
1971 hired to be sales rep. for Ben Hogan. . . in 1972,
started his own manufacturers’ rep. . . has attempted
to qualify for Senior Open several times. . . in 1999,
qualified for Senior Open. . . low amateur in 2002,
but several professionals qualified above him. . . married,
has a son, Trent, 28, who will caddie for him at the Senior Open,
and a daughter, Brandyn, 31. . . grandfather of 1,
with two more on the way. . . hopes to inspire people
who have had heart surgery, show that recovery is possible. . . Has
played in two U.S. Mid-Amateur championships, 1988 and ’98. . . Caddied
in U.S. Women’s Open for Sandra Palmer back in 1978 at Indianapolis
Country Club. . . currently serving as president of
the Indiana Golf Association. |
