Turned Professional in 1977, but reinstated as an
amateur in 1980
Other Key Notes: A commercial insurance agent by day. . . Started
playing golf in high school, went to work at Los Verdes Golf Shop
right after high school, then to Oakmont Country Club in southern
California, becoming a class-A PGA member in 1977. . . reinstated
as an amateur in 1980. Competed in many amateur tournaments in 1980s
and 1990s until having elbow surgery in 1995, at which point
forced to give up golf for three years. . . started
playing golf again in 1998, and upon reaching age 50 began playing
in more senior amateur tournaments, including Long Beach City Classic
and qualifying round for U.S. Senior Open at Pauma Valley Country
Club. . . qualified for the Senior Open after shooting
72 and winning playoff, relying on experience and confidence to
make long-time "dream" come true. . . married,
with four children (daughters, 30, 28, 16. . . son,
10) and three grandchildren. . . Self-proclaimed
"working stiff" who sneaks out every so often to play
golf but never thought he’d qualify for a spot in the U.S. Open.
