Longtime pitcher for the Dodgers (1974-78) and the Pirates
(1979-86). . . also pitched for the Yankees and Astros. . . overcame
childhood osteomyelitis (a bone disease. . . he wore
a brace until he was 12, and had surgery to remove part of his left
knee so it would not outgrow his right) and serious shoulder surgery
in 1979 to become one of the more dependable pitchers of the 1980s. . . played
15 years in Big Leagues, compiled 151-125 record, nearly 1500 strikeouts,
with 3.59 career ERA. . . all-star in 1976, ’86.
Recently won the Mellon-Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational for
the fourth time. . . has won the American Century
Championship five times, most recently in ’99. . . qualified
for Senior Open with score of 69, won in a playoff at Deer Run Golf
Club in Gibsonia, Pa.
