More Than 20 Years of Service

Unisys people have worked with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews since the 1980 British Open Championship at Muirfield, where the company first supplied a computer results service.

BBC broadcasters were intrigued with what they saw. As a result, in 1981, Unisys offered its first computer-driven graphics service. This enabled a TV audience of millions to instantly see leaderboard changes. In 1995, Unisys was among the first to provide live golf scoring over the Web – and again the British Open was at the forefront of employing this technology.

Since then, Unisys has constantly added system capabilities.  For example, at the 1998 British Open at Royal Birkdale the company introduced a new Microsoft Windows based scoring system. Unisys installed approximately 150 terminals and printers in the Royal and Ancient scoring operation, the media center, International TV compound and hospitality units. More than 10 kilometers of cable linked all this together. All in all, it's a computer system capable of running a large-scale industrial complex or a banking network.

Appropriately, 2002 marked the 23rd year of our affiliation, made even more special with the British Open being held at St. Andrews – and a historic Tiger Woods win. Unisys and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club recently confirmed an extension of their long running relationship to 2006.

Unisys people have also worked very closely with the Royal and Ancient helping them orchestrate The Open Championship.
