A Shoulder injury that he got in 1982 pretty much put an end to his career in which he played in 365 PGA Tour events.

Was expected to make his Champions Tour debut in September shortly after turning 50, but July surgery forced him to postpone plans. . . Underwent surgery on his left shoulder, the same one he had done in 1987. Dr. James Andrews performed the "cleaning out" surgery in July. Pate spent the remainder of the year undergoing rehabilitation, with plans to be ready to go at the start of the 2004 season.
