1989
Orville Moody
Orville Moody charged into the lead with an 8-under-par 64 in the third round, and became only the fourth man to win both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open. Moody had won the U.S. Open in 1969. Moody won the Senior Open by two strokes over Frank Beard, shooting 279 at Laurel Valley Golf Club, in Ligonier, Pa. Beard shot a 281.
With rounds of 72 and 73, Moody, 55, had fallen six strokes behind the leaders after two days of play. He took the lead near the end of the third round, and won by shooting 70 in the fourth round, helped by an eagle 3 on the sixth hole. He joins Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Billy Casper as winners of both.
There were 14 rounds shot in the 60s, but except for Moody's 64, none drew as much attention as the 69 by amateur Frank Boydston in the first round. As Boydston fell behind on succeeding days, Jim McMurtrey became low amateur with a 72-hole total of 300. |
