Player Notes: Gilder starred for the Arizona State golf team. Along with Howard Twitty and Tom Purtzer the team won the 1973 Western Athletic Conference title. After graduation in 1973, he tried for his Tour card, but failed in three different attempts. Gilder won the New Zealand Open in 1974, beating Jack Newton and Bob Charles in a playoff. His fourth trip to the Q-school was a charm, as he earned his card and on his second tournament in 1976 won the Phoenix Open. In his next four years he made the top 75 in earnings and visited the winnerís circle again with a victory in the 1980 Canadian Open. His best season on tour has to be in 1982 has he won three times (Byron Nelson, Westchester and Bank of Boston) and earned $308,648. He was sixth on the money list and played on the 1983 Ryder Cup Team . . . What is best remembered of his '83 season, was his double-eagle 2 he made on the 18th hole on national TV, during the third round of the Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic. He won the Phoenix Open again in 1983, in splendid fashion, beating Rex Caldwell, Johnny Miller and Mark O'Meara in an eight-hole playoff. In 1988 he won the Kapalua International, beating John Mahaffey by two strokes.
