Miller Barber

Miller Barber, 54, of Sherman, Texas, won his second consecutive Senior Open Championship and his third in five tries. Barber's 3-under-par 285 beat 1980 champion Roberto De Vicenzo by four strokes at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nev. Barber's other wins in the Senior Open came in 1982 and 1984.

The first-round lead was held by Walter Zembriski of Orlando, Fla., who set a Senior Open first-round record with 68. Peter Thomson of Australia and Barber were the only other golfers to shoot rounds below par on the first day. Thomson posted a 70. Barber recorded a 71. Zembriski shot 73 in the second round, giving him a 141 total, one stroke better than De Vicenzo, who had a second-round 68. Barber posted an even-par 72 and was two strokes off the pace of Zembriski. Barber gained the lead in the third round, posting his second round of 71 for the championship. Zembriski opened his round with five pars then managed only one birdie to six bogeys for the rest of the day and finished with a 78.

De Vicenzo held onto second place, but his 75 left him three strokes behind Barber. The defending champion sealed his victory early on the final day as he birdied three of the first four holes on his way to another round of 71 and the victory. De Vicenzo shot a final-round 72 to secure second place, two strokes ahead of Gay Brewer. William Hyndman, Ill, the 1973 and 1983 Senior Amateur champion, was low amateur at 303. The USGA received a record 1, 029 entries for the championship.
