Third Round Rules Roundup

Most Rulings given out during the third round had to do with giving relief from immovable obstructions such as sprinkler heads and cart paths. Common occurrences while playing golf for anyone. But what is not as common for most of us is a large gallery following our play. Sometimes the gallery can get a little more involved than intended. During play of round two and round three we had incidences of spectators picking up a player’s ball in play. More >

Round Two Rulings

ound two was more eventful than average championship days. First were the chimes from the Will Roger’s Shrine to the Sun that distracted Hale Irwin on the first tee. Then we had a bear come out and visit the players and gallery, followed up by two players who were disqualified in scoring for signing for a score lower than they actually had on a hole. More >

For Hale The Bell Tolls

We had an interesting Ruling on the first tee during the second round today. More >

Rulings On The Course

Yesterday we had 59 rulings on the course, most of which had to do with Temporary Immovable Obstructions or Water Hazards. Having many Rulings on Temporary Immovable Obstructions (TIOs) is not unusual at events where you have television and grandstands on most every hole. More >

Life In The Scoring Area

Scoring is where I’m assigned this week. In this area the player is responsible to sign his card and make sure his hole-by-hole score is correct – per Rule 6-6 that covers the player’s responsibilities. More >

The Broadmoor Bears

I had written earlier about the wildlife at The Broadmoor. There really is a lot of it and we are practicing good habits to minimize their actions on the championship course. Let me clarify this: last night, the ecology crew was METICULOUS about picking up the garbage and dispensing it in large bins in a maintenance area. They learned a lesson the hard way when they arrived the previous morning. More >

TV And Rules

The U.S. Senior Open will be televised this week. Which means you can catch all the great action from The Broadmoor’s East Course from the luxury of your home (or office, local pub, etc). More >

Final Tweaks

The Rules staff is finalizing plans, adding finishing touches and tweaking things for the championship rounds. It’s not exciting stuff but necessary. For example, we are putting in our mid-point stakes. These stakes are used to help the referee determine the drop zone a player must use when the player has interference from a grandstand and there are multiple drop zones. More >

The Course Is Going To The Kids

Yesterday I was cruising around the golf course and checked out the main entrance. Among the many tents is the USGA’s Catch The Spirit presented by RBS area for kids. The kids get a really cool Catch the Spirit baseball cap, an I Love Golf button, the Arnold Palmer newspaper and the kids can enter the Holiday Card Contest. More >

Officiating At A USGA Open Championship

The last of the USGA’s Open championships is upon us as the 2008 U.S. Senior Open kicks off at The Broadmoor’s East Course in Colorado Springs.

Each of the three USGA’s Open championships is very unique with respect to how they are officiated. Each group will have a referee that will walk with the players. This referee is there to assist in all Rules related matters. There will also be what we call "Rules Rovers" on the course. The rovers are available to assist a referee should they need it. They are strategically positioned on the course in carts and will be responsible for covering a 2-4 hole zone each day. In the midst of a "sticky" ruling, the rover can seem like the cavalry riding in over the hill to save the day to a referee. More >

Paperwork...

The Rules staff at the U.S. Senior Open has been working to prepare everything for 1) the players and 2) the invited referees for the championship.

We have marked the hazards, mapped out the possible hole locations for the week and now we are finalizing some of the paperwork. This would include our "Hole-By-Hole" notes, which we give each referee to help them. Essentially the hole-by-hole notes will list the items of rules interest on each hole. Here’s an example: More >

Welcome To The Rules Corner

Welcome to the Rules Corner for the U.S. Senior Open. Let’s take a look at this championship and why it’s unique.

First of all, this is an "Open." This means that the championship is open to both professionals and amateur players. The USGA runs three national championships that include golf professionals and all three of those are our Open Championships (U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open). More >
