Player notes:While still seeking his first Champions Tour win, O’Meara did register 16 PGA Tour victories, including the 1998 Masters and British Open, becoming at 41, the oldest player to win two majors in the same year…Broke onto national scene in 1979 by defeating John Cook for the U.S. Amateur title at Canterbury C.C. in Cleveland…Also won the 1979 California Amateur, defeating future PGA Tour player Lennie Clements in the final, and the ’79 Mexican Amateur, knocking off college All-American and future PGA Tour player Gary Hallberg on the last day…Earned All-American honors at Long Beach State…Five-time member of the U.S. Ryder Cup (1985, ’89, ’91, ’97 and ’99)…Also a member of two Presidents Cup squads in 1996 and ’98…Continues fund-raising efforts on behalf of long-time caddie Donnie Wanstall, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during the 1994 Players Championship…Took up game at 13 when family moved above a golf course in southern California…Teamed with PGA Tour Design Services to build TPC of Valencia (Calif.), which opened in 2003…Son Shaun has competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur and now plays golf for UC Irvine.
