Lee Trevino

Lee Trevino combined first and last rounds of 67 and won by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus, at the Ridgewood Country Club, in Paramus, N.J. Trevino shot 275, 13 under par, and Nicklaus shot 277. Gary Player, Mike Hill and Chi Chi Rodriguez tied for third place, at 281. Hill and Rodriguez shot final rounds in the 60s, and Player shot 73. With rounds of 67-68, Trevino held a one stroke advantage over Jim Dent after 36 holes, but he surrendered the lead to Nicklaus after the third round.

Nicklaus shot 67, and led by a stroke, with 207. Trevino rebounded from his third round of 73 and promptly birdied the second, third, and sixth holes of his final round to regain the lead. Nicklaus made a move on the final nine, with birdies on the 11th, 13th, 15th, and 16th, but a bogey at the 17th dropped him two strokes behind. Player's second round of 65 was the lowest score. He began the round with seven consecutive birdies—a record for the Senior Open.
