Player Notes: Funk started to play golf at about age 10, picking up the game on his own because it looked like something he wanted to do; by 14 he knew that he wanted to play on the PGA Tour. He tried for his Tour card in 1984, '85 and '86 with little success, and his dream of playing on the Tour suffered a serious setback when he tore a rotator cuff in 1987. . . He became the golf coach at the University of Maryland, and was successful competing as a club pro, winning the 1984 Foot-Joy National Assistants Championship and the Maryland State Open in 1984 and 1987. He also won the Mid-Atlantic PGA Championship three times. In 1988 he finally succeeded at Q-school, and then succeeded again the next year. In the 1990 season he had three top-10 finishes, and continued to improve, winning for the first time in 1992 at the Houston Open. . . Led the PGA Tour in driving accuracy in 1995, '96, '99, 2000 and 2003, 2nd in '97, '05 and '06, 3rd in 2001 and finished 7th in '98. . . Between 1990 and the end of the 2006 season played in 534 PGA Tour events, more than anyone else in that time period. Member of the 2003 and '05 Presidents Cup team, also the 2004 Ryder Cup team. In 2007 he found success on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour...In his second Champions Tour appearance of the season, won by a record 11 strokes at the Turtle Bay Championship. Led wire-to-wire for the second time in his brief Champions Tour career and also played bogey-free golf over the three days. Fired rounds of 65-64-64--193...At age 50 years, 8 months and 12 days, earned eighth PGA Tour victory in fourth start of the season at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Fifth-oldest champion in PGA TOUR history and the oldest since Art Wall (51 years, 7 months, 10 days) at the 1975 Greater Milwaukee Open. Posted rounds of 62-69-64-71--266 and beat Jose Coceres with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff, hitting a 4-iron on the par-3 10th to 6 feet. Joined Craig Stadler as the only players to win in the same season on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour.
