Player Notes: With Masters Champion Bob Goalby as his uncle and exemplar, it may have been inevitable that Haas would have a career in golf. At age 5, Haas took his first swings with a short, broken club that Goalby had re-gripped. Under Goalby's watchful eye, Haas placed third in the first tournament he ever entered, the National Pee Wee Championship. He had a fine amateur career, capped off by playing on the 1975 Walker Cup Team and winning the NCAA Championship. Haas earned his PGA Tour card in the fall of 1976 and won $32,326 his first year on tour. In his 2nd year, 1978, he won the Andy Williams-San Diego Open by three strokes. Haas would have big seasons in both 1981 and 1982, winning twice each year and moving up to 15th and 13th on the money list. He was a member of the Ryder Cup Team for the first time in 1983 (he would play again in 1995 and in 2004), but despite continued consistency in his game was at the start of a five-year winless spell. His next win came in the 1987 Big "I" Houston Open in a playoff over Buddy Gardner; Haas holed a birdie putt of 70 feet on the last hole to send the tournament into overtime and won it with par on the first extra hole. . . His brother-in-law Dillard Pruitt competed on the PGA Tour for several years and is now a tour rules official. . .Since joining the tour in 1977 has finished in the top 60 of the money list 21 times and the top 100 every year but one, 2000. Became a full-time member of the Champions Tour in 2005. Member of the 1983, '95 and 2004 Ryder Cup team and the 1994 and 2003 Presidents Cup team.
