Player Notes: Born in Ohio but grew up in Southern California. Cook's high school sporting interests were golf, basketball and football, but after deciding that he was too light for football and too short for basketball, began concentrating solely on golf. In 1974 he won the World Junior, and, on the advice of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, chose to play college golf at Ohio State. He was an All-American there three years, and the team won the 1979 NCAA title. In 1978 Cook won the U.S. Amateur, and then in '79 lost in the finals to Mark O'Meara. He turned pro after that and won the 1981 Crosby in his second year on tour. After several years of playing through the pain, Cook finally had an operation on his right hand in 1989. He returned slowly to competition, losing playoffs twice in 1990. 1992 was the year that he finally began performing up to the potential he had shown in his amateur career. Cook won three times, finished second at both the British Open and PGA Championship, and ended up third on the money list.
