Player Notes: Started playing golf when he was 10 by going to a neighboring golf course with his older brother. A natural lefthander, he started using ladies clubs because they were the only left-handed ones he could find. Several people tried to switch him around and play right-handed, but no one made a real effort to change him so he stayed a southpaw. After playing for the University of Kentucky golf team, he had an urge to play on the PGA Tour. He went to the Q-school but didn't make it until his third try in 1982. During the early weeks of 1983, he was not enjoying much success. He was sponsoring himself, and after the first three months won only $3,500 and was running out of money. With the advent of the Tournament Players Series in 1983, Cochran had another avenue to gain the experience he needed. In 18 starts on the TPS, he won two tournaments (Magnolia Classic and Greater Baltimore Open) and led the series in money won with $100,863 in earnings. That launched him on his way to success. In 1984 he won $133,342 which placed him 51st on the money list. Even with physical problems in 1985 and '86 he has been in the top 125 every year between 1984 and 2000 except for in 1995 and 1999. In 1995 he was 131st when he missed three months due to neck disk problems. Also missed the top 125 in 1999. In his PGA Tour career made 597 career starts, making 356 cuts and 58 top-ten finishes.
